Ecotourism Project Kicks Off

During the week of July 17th, sustainable tourism expert Costas Christ and his team with Beyond Green Travel, spent time touring our region and visiting with local officials, tourism experts and environmental leaders.

On Tuesday, Costas and his team started their tour in South Mobile County including stops on Dauphin Island and in Bayou la Batre. They met with the Mayor of Dauphin Island, leaders with the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Mobile Bay National Estuary Program. The team explored the areas around the Dauphin Island Sea Lab & Estuarium and Bayou la Batre’s Lightening Point.

On Wednesday, the team traveled to the North end of our region, to Bay Minette to see Live Oak Landing, Rice Landing and areas along the Delta with leaders from the North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce.

For their final adventure, the team met with leaders of Mobile’s African American Heritage Tour, took a boat tour of the lower Delta and visited Meaher and Blakeley State Parks.

The team will continue to explore our region over the next few months as they assess our region ecotourism product and develop an online resource directory with a list of ecotourism destinations in the two county Gulf Coast region. Stay tuned!
