Our next Coastal Symposium looks at the topic of wind insurance and new programs that may result in huge savings for homeowners.
The Wind Insurance Symposium: Building a Stronger Coastal Alabama is set for Wednesday, Dec. 4 from 1-4 p.m. at The Battle House. Presented by Coastal Alabama Partnership and Smart Home America, the program will review steps being taken to improve wind insurance premium rates across Coastal Alabama. There will also be an announcement of a program that can result in discounts of up to 60 percent starting next year.
Alabama state law mandates insurance discounts on wind premiums for homes built or retrofitted to the FORTIFIED standards from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety. The standards present practical solutions for improving the quality of structures against natural hazards.
Among the guest speakers are Julia Rochman, president and CEO of the Institute for Business and Home Safety, and Fred Malik, FORTIFIED project manager.
Charles Angel from the Alabama Department of Insurance will lead a session on the Strengthen Alabama Homes Mitigation Program, which also assists homeowners in fortifying their homes against wind damage. Matt Fuchs, deputy director of resilience policy from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, will provide information on pilot projects from his department aimed at safeguarding homes in the Gulf Coast from wind damage.
